Program Notes

Me, Myself, and I was written for tubist Nolan Kozlovsky.

When first meeting with Nolan to discuss the piece, he introduced me to Tuba multiphonics, a technique I was familiar with on clarinet, but works differently on Tuba. This technique is achieved by playing a pitch and humming a pitch into the instrument at the same time, not only creating two distinct pitches but also an incredibly fascinating timbre. This concept was my guiding light when it came to what this piece would be about, my own inner monologue

An inner monologue is a phenomenon where one is able to hear their own voice in their head, often leading to interpersonal communication, something I experience somewhat frequently. My inner monologue is most active when I am trying to fall asleep, and is what I decided to focus on as an arch for this piece.

Typically, as I lay my head on my pillow, my conversations tend to start off pleasant. This is represented in Movement 1, Inner Dialogue; a wave of tranquility washes over me, and on a good night this would be all there is to it. A few fleeting thoughts before I finally fall asleep. This piece is representative of the other nights when I move into Movement 2, Deep in Thought, where as the title suggests, my conversations become less surface level and more inquisitive or involved. This stage over a short period of time can take me from almost falling asleep to completely frantic which is represented by Movement 3, Mind Racing, where my conversations become complete chaos, spiraling if you will.
